Sign Language Interpreting, Undergraduate Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

The Sign Language Interpreting undergraduate post-baccalaureate certificate prepares students with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to enter the field of American Sign Language/English interpretation. Students develop confidence in American Sign Language and English, proficiency in linguistic and cultural analysis, and the interpersonal skills needed to develop a relevant and sound professional practice. Interpreters work within a variety of venues and settings, including kindergarten through grade 12 and post-secondary educational settings, video relay service, community events, medical and mental health settings, and performance and theatrical interpreting. This certificate program is for students who have previously earned a bachelor's degree.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the certificate will be based on the following:

  • Admission to Georgia State University as a post-baccalaureate student
  • Proof of a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Completion of an American Sign Language Interpreting Certificate Program application
  • Completion of a program orientation
  • Successful completion of an entrance interview demonstrating at least intermediate conversational proficiency in American Sign Language, and visual-motor fluency
  • Submission of online program application

This program has the following requirement to be completed:

There are 16 classes equaling 48 hours that need to be completed over five semesters, which includes one summer between the first and junior and senior years (or first and second year of the program for certificate students).

The Sign Language Interpreting program prepares students with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to enter the field of American Sign Language/English interpretation. Students develop confidence in their working languages, proficiency in linguistic and cultural analysis, and the interpersonal skills needed to develop a relevant and sound professional practice.

American Sign Language interpreters work in a variety of venues and settings, including:

  • Kindergarten through 12th grade educational settings
  • Post-secondary educational settings
  • Video relay and video remote interpretation
  • Community events
  • Medical and mental health settings
  • Performance and theatrical interpreting

To continue your studies, we offer a bachelor’s degree in sign language interpreting.
