Reading Recovery is a short-term, early literacy intervention, designed to prevent failure for children who are at risk from failing to learn to read and write in the first grade.

It is a scientifically-based, evidence-proven reading research program that teaches all the essential elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and motivation to read.

Reading Recovery enables the lowest-achieving learners to make accelerated progress, catch up with grade-level peers and profit from regular classroom reading instruction.

We offer two levels of training: Teacher Training and Teacher Leader Training

The program for training in Reading Recovery prepares teachers to observe, assess and address reading problems in children in the first grade, using assessment, observation and early intervention/prevention and teaching procedures developed by Dr. Marie Clay.

Admissions Requirements

Contact the program director, Sue Duncan, Ph.D. at 404-413-8024 or [email protected] before applying. Applicants must be employed in an approved position in a partnering school system.

When applying to Reading Recovery (special cohorts only), submit the following:

  • Online Application
  • Application Fee of $50
  • Goals Statement (upload with the application)
  • Resume (upload with the application)
  • Proof that you meet certification requirements in Georgia
  • Official Transcript: minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA or a master’s degree required for admission consideration
  • Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Supporting materials and documents as determined by the Reading Recovery Program. Since this is a “special cohorts” program, your partnering school system and the Reading Recovery team will provide you with a list of required materials and documents.

Clay, the faculty of The Ohio State University College of Education and the Reading Recovery Council of North America (RRCNA). It has been granted a royalty-free license to use the name “Reading Recovery” in conjunction with the program.

The partnership between university and schools allows for intensive training for new teachers and teacher leaders. Teachers adding Reading Recovery to their list of endorsements and certificates enables them to further their careers in early childhood and elementary school settings.
