Online Teacher Support and Coaching Endorsement

The Teacher Support and Coaching (TSC) Endorsement Program in Early Childhood and Elementary Education is one of six endorsements offered through the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education.

The TSC Endorsement is embedded in the M.Ed. Elementary Education program as one of the eight concentrations offered to students. In addition, graduate students may elect to earn a stand-alone endorsement in TSC by enrolling and successfully completing: ECE 8400 Teacher Development and ECE 8680 Internship in Teacher Support.

Candidates must have three years of teaching experience to be eligible to enroll in the six (6) hours of Teacher Support and Coaching Endorsement courses.

One content course focuses on developing a deep and broad knowledge of research on teacher development, induction and retention including the:

  • conditions and contexts that may inhibit or promote teacher knowledge, growth and change
  • professional learning needs of teachers across their career lifespan
  • productive coaching activities

One internship course provides an authentic residency that focuses on coaching and mentoring teacher candidates and other early-career teachers.

The TSCE is designed as a learning community in which the engagement of participants is optimized through opportunities to develop identities of the teacher as researcher, mentor, student-centered practitioner and professional learner. Therefore, the course strives to develop teachers who become:

  • Knowledgeable teachers who can challenge their students’ thinking and constructing knowledge relative to early childhood, elementary and middle-level education.
  • Social activists who challenge the systems that limit the access, opportunity and development of young children, adolescents, and their families.
  • Active seekers of knowledge who remain current on theory and research and can critique, synthesize and implement these ideas in their practice.
  • Thoughtful writers and speakers who disseminate ideas through publication, electronic media and other public venues.
  • Leaders and collaborators who are motivated to serve academia, the community, and/or the profession.

Graduate students who enroll in and satisfy requirements for ECE 8400 and ECE 8680 will have earned a Teacher Support and Coaching (TSC) Endorsement. The requirements for the theoretical and empirical foundations of the endorsement are embedded in course assignments in ECE 8400. Complementary to ECE 8400, the field-based components which connect theory, research and practice are required during the internship experience in ECE 8680.

ECE 8400 and ECE 8680 also embed the TSC standards which all students will be expected to meet. Please refer to PSC Rule 505-3-.105 Teacher Support and Coaching (TSC) Endorsement.

People who get this endorsement may find careers as instructional coaches, teacher leaders, mentor teachers or work in a university setting as a coach or supervisor.
