Exercise Science, M.S.

The Georgia State M.S. in Exercise Science prepares students to conduct research in exercise science or pursue careers in worksite health promotion or fitness, cardiac rehabilitation or related clinical programs.

The program includes classroom, laboratory, research and field experience in biomechanics, exercise physiology, psychology of physical activity and related interdisciplinary coursework in areas such as public health, gerontology and nutrition.

Exercise science provides advanced academic preparation for a successful career in the health and fitness field or for advancement to doctoral-level study.

Tony Price

Tony Price has a B.A. and M.S. in Exercise Science from Georgia State and is now pursuing a doctorate degree. He is a research associate at the Georgia Health Policy Center at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.

Admissions Requirements

When applying to the Exercise Science, M.S. program, you will need to submit several documents for review.

  • Application Fee of $50
  • Goals Statement (upload with the application)
  • Resume (upload with the application)
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (identify your recommenders on the application); preferably both from university professors in your major who can evaluate your academic promise (letters from family, friends, and athletic coaches are not accepted)
  • Official Transcript(s): minimum 2.75 GPA required for admission.

Select five courses (15): In consultation with their adviser, students will select coursework numbered 6000 or higher in a specific area of emphasis. At least 9 of the 15 elective credits must be Exercise Science courses.

Select one course (6): In consultation with their adviser, students will select one of the following culminating experiences.

  • KH 7750 Internship in Exercise Science (6)
  • KH 7810 Directed Readings and Research (6)
  • KH 7990 Master’s Thesis (6)

  • Summer: February 1 (only for applicants who have not completed all prerequisite undergraduate coursework (see below)
  • Prerequisite Undergraduate Coursework: applied human musculoskeletal anatomy (KH 2220), human physiology (KH 2230), exercise physiology (KH 3650), biomechanics (KH 3600), and fitness assessment and exercise prescription (KH 4630). Applicants with deficiencies in these areas will be required to apply for Summer semester admission.

Graduate Assistantships

  • Department Teaching/Research Assistant (All applicants are encouraged to complete and submit the assistantship application (email to [email protected]). The KH department has a limited number of positions and these positions vary from semester-to-semester. In addition, admittance into the program does not guarantee an assistantship.)
