This is the only fully-online master’s program in Higher Education Administration offered by a research-intensive (R1) university in the state.

Georgia State University is an enterprising urban public research institution. Faculty in our program are breaking new ground in how we understand diversity and equity in higher education, minority-serving institutions, higher education policy and student success.

This program provides the skills to be successful in careers in higher education administration:

  • Knowledge of institutional landscape of higher education, governance and issues faced by colleges and universities, especially institutional types in Georgia such as minority-serving institutions and community colleges.
  • Understanding of how colleges and universities shape – and are shaped by – race, gender and class
  • Understanding of social and academic integration and how to design support services based on these principals
  • Ability to apply higher education theory and concepts in a real-world setting
Program Details

When applying to the Higher Education Administration Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies (online) program, you will need to submit several documents for review.

The admission requirements are:

  • Online Application
  • Application Fee of $50
  • Goals Statement (upload with the application)
  • Resume (upload with the application)
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (identify your recommenders on the application; recent letters of recommendation are required by persons who can evaluate academic promise)
  • Official Transcript(s): minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA required for admission

The program consists of 30 credit hours of courses delivered fully online by expert scholars and practitioners who would provide students with theoretical, empirical and practical skills necessary for success in higher education careers. To complete the degree requirements, students are required to fulfill the 6-credit master’s core requirement in EPS, a 3-credit hour internship, a 3-credit interdisciplinary elective and 18 credit hours for the Higher Education Administration major. There are no pre-requisites, and the courses can be taken in any order.

Professional Studies (6 hours)
Students will select two EPS courses with a focus on research, foundations of education and pedagogy.

Internship (3 hours)
Each student will be responsible for arranging a placement within an office, program or unit that is involved in higher education.

Elective (3 hours)
Students will select a course from a provided list of electives. Other online courses in the university will be considered with approval from the chair of the student’s advisory committee.

Major (18 hours)
Students will complete six required courses related to higher education administration.

The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in Higher Education Administration prepares students for entry and mid-level positions in the field of higher education. It is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in postsecondary education, including career paths in student affairs, admissions and financial aid, institutional research, development and fundraising, athletics administration, residence life, alumni relations and university relations.

This program also represents an important first step for students considering a doctorate in higher education. The program’s internship also presents students with an important career opportunity to network with other higher education departments and institutions.
