Geosciences, B.S. Geology Concentration

The Geology concentration focuses on physical, chemical and biological aspects of the surface and interior of the Earth. This concentration is recommended for students who will later pursue licensure as a professional geologist, which is required for supervisory work in many environmental and other fields.

The Department of Geosciences includes a diverse faculty of scholars from the disciplines of geography, geology and hydrology. Research clusters in the department investigate pressing urban environmental issues, including water, from water governance to water quality and quantity, climate change and quantity, geochemical processes, and geographic information systems and informatics.

Geosciences, B.S.

In addition to the Program Degree Requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements (see section 3030) and the University Degree Requirements (see section 1400).

The department offers two endowed scholarships for undergraduate majors: the Ernest Fritz Memorial Field Camp Endowment and the David E. Ogren Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

For general tuition information, check out our cost calculator or visit student financial services for information on estimated costs.

The geology concentration prepares students for practical and essential applications in a wide range of careers and is also excellent preparation for graduate work in geology and environmental science, geography and urban studies. For students who are interested in geoscience and environmental science but who intend to pursue graduate or advanced study in other fields, for example environmental law or business, the B.S. degree may still be an appropriate choice.

Description

Careers

An undergraduate degree in geosciences prepares students for employment in the public and private sector. Geographers find employment as cartographers, city/regional planners, conservationists, environmental managers, environmental regulators, geographic information system specialists, historic preservationists, location analysts and as physical scientists working for the government. With their broad liberal arts training, geographers also qualify for professional management positions as well as work as teachers. The B.S. degree meets certain federal criteria required for science-track career pathways in federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Geological Survey and others.
