Students can declare the concentration upon application to the university. Students may enter the program in the fall, spring or summer.

Arts Administration, B.I.S.

The Georgia State University Arts Administration concentration provides students with a broad-based knowledge of business and the arts and positions graduates for managerial positions in galleries, theaters and other arts organizations, especially in the nonprofit sector. The program allows students with an interest in the arts to develop widely marketable skills. Students take courses in nonprofit management, business communication and marketing with electives in business administration, creative media industries study, entrepreneurship, marketing and nonprofit management.

There are four thematic concentrations: Art History Administration, Music Administration, Studio Administration and Theatre Administration.

Students can pursue their interest in the arts in one of these four areas while also taking courses in nonprofit management, business communication and marketing.

An internship course is required for Art History Administration and Theatre Administration or can be taken as an elective in Music Administration and Theatre Administration. Other possible electives include business administration, creative media industries and world languages courses.

Our campus is in the heart of downtown Atlanta. We are part of a thriving, vibrant arts scene with many arts administration opportunities in art, music and theatre.

There are no admissions requirements for this program, beyond acceptance into the university.

High School Seniors and Recent Graduates
If you’re a senior in high school or if you graduated from high school within the last two years, you’ll apply to begin your bachelor’s degree program using Georgia State’s Common Application.

International applicants are those students who are in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa (B-1, H-1, J-1, etc.), students who are living outside the U.S. and who will require an F-1 visa to study in the United States, students who are in the process of applying for Permanent Residency status but have not yet received the Permanent Residency card or students who have been educated outside the U.S.

This Arts Administration concentration is designed to provide students with a broad-based knowledge of business and the arts and will position graduates for managerial positions in galleries, theaters and other arts organizations, especially in the nonprofit sector. The program should allow the student with an interest in the arts to develop widely marketable skills. Students take courses in nonprofit management, business communication and marketing with electives in business administration, creative media industries study, entrepreneurship, marketing and/or nonprofit management. An individual student, in consultation with a faculty advisor, may tailor a program of study that meets his or her particular educational needs, desires and interests.

Goals:
While artists make art, other professionals are needed to have them seen and heard. Many students want to express their creativity while developing the business acumen and industry knowledge to work behind the scenes.

Outcomes:

  1. Students will understand the basic concepts, policies and standards that govern arts organizations as well as the current management and marketing techniques, grant writing strategies and operating systems utilized in this sector.
  2. Students will develop an understanding of the creative process in and the history and role in society of either Art, Music or Theatre.
  3. Students will connect theory to practice in arts administration through class assignments/projects, guest speakers, experiential learning, internships, etc.
