Teaching and Learning, Ph.D.
The Ph.D. major in Teaching and Learning is designed to prepare you as a professional educator for leadership positions by developing a substantial knowledge base in one of the following areas of concentration: Language and Literacy Education Mathematics Education (only admits for summer & fall with an application deadline of March 1) Music Education Science Education Social Studies Education Teaching and Teacher Education In addition, the program prepares professional educators as scholarly inquirers who ask thoughtful questions, who can conduct sound inquiry and who can recommend informed policy.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Undergraduate Certificate
The certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) equips students with skills that will enable them to teach English as a Foreign Language abroad. The TEFL certificate is designed as a credential for those who plan short-term stays overseas and is open to Georgia State University students in any undergraduate major. The program requires students to complete a series of five undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Applied Linguistics & English as a Second Language. Students who are likely to be interested in the certificate program include: Those in disciplines where an extended stay abroad would enhance their skills, employment or graduate school admission possibilities upon their return. People who are simply interested in the adventure of living in another culture and of gaining knowledge of the world. Individuals with a bachelor's degree who are interested in working abroad but do not want to make the long term professional commitment involved in earning a graduate degree. Majors in Language Studies interested in further graduate study in applied linguistics. For these students, earning the certificate as part of their undergraduate degree requirements can enhance their graduate school potential. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Graduate Certificate
The TESOL graduate certificate prepares students to teach English as a second or foreign language. Teaching English as a second language has been an expanding field for decades and continues to show persistent growth in job and educational opportunities. Because people globally continue to be interested in learning English and because local and national governments, non-governmental organizations and corporations continue to support English language education, potential career growth remains strong. The TESOL certificate prepares you to: Learn language teaching methodology and principles of second language acquisition. Study the nature of language and the structure of English. Gain insights into classroom teaching. The TESOL Certificate is an entry-level credential for those who plan short-term stays overseas or who are interested in employment in schools for adults, private language institutes or nonprofit organizations that offer adult English language courses. Textiles, B.F.A.
The Textiles emphasis fosters personal exploration of subject matter, technical proficiency in a broad range of working methods and professional presentation. Textiles is presented in both historic and contemporary contexts, demonstrating the continuing relevance of the field and its many applications. The work produced in the Textiles B.F.A. has prepared students for careers in fine art, the textile industry, the film industry, and graduate study. Once accepted into the program, students in the Textiles emphasis begin with basic textile design courses providing a foundation in surface design and basic sewn structures. At the intermediate and advanced levels, students broaden their technical experience by learning hand and digital processes in quilting, embroidery, pattern design, pattern printing. Students also learn soft sculpture processes, hand and machine tufting, on and off-loom weaving and other flexible forms. Students are encouraged to develop multi-media and inter-disciplinary approaches, and take electives in other disciplines.
Textiles, M.F.A.
The Georgia State University Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Textiles program emphasizes professional skills and achievements and fosters personal direction, diversity, technical proficiency and professional presentation. The Textiles program offers a highly progressive curriculum that considers Textiles as a broad-based practice while providing a strong foundation in the history of the discipline and fostering technical mastery of the material. The individual direction of each student is further developed and focused through intensive time in the studio, group interaction across disciplines and periodic critical reviews. Sensitive handling of material, the integrity of craftsmanship and depth of inquiry are the unifying characteristics of work made in the Textiles M.F.A. program. The program emphasizes group seminars and critiques to provide a variety of settings for the development and exchange of ideas relevant to the arts in general and textiles in particular. In the final two semesters of the graduate program, the student completes a thesis exhibition and writes a supporting thesis paper. A strong component of the graduate program involves assistantships in either studio work or in teaching undergraduate-level courses. Students may teach a variety of courses during their studies, from Foundations to Intermediate Textiles. These experiences in conjunction with the acquisition of professional skills such as resume writing, job application skills and self-promotion prepare the student with the tools to be a professional artist once studies are complete.
Theatre Pathway, A.A.
What Is Theatre? Study in theatre offers exposure to creative dramatic expression, primarily in front of live audiences. It involves study of all types of artistic performance–in theaters, educational institutions, on TV, in movies and outdoors. Areas of specialization include acting, directing, theatre history and criticism, playwriting, design, theatre technology, theatre studies (education) and creative drama. Why Study Theatre? Perimeter College’s guided pathway in Theatre offers small class size, professional theatre faculty and “on the job” training as well as work on high-quality theatrical productions. Students are well-prepared for further college study or entry into the job market. Studying theatre allows students to develop the artistic depth and professional knowledge needed for pursuing careers in theatrical professions, non-profits, higher education and commercial enterprises. Employers find theatre-trained applicants are valuable employees because they’re often energetic, enthusiastic and able to work under pressure. They generally have polished communications and human relations skills, and they’re experienced at working as members of a team toward a common goal. Most important, theatre graduates have developed self-confidence based on their experience of meeting difficult challenges. A note on pathways: A pathway is an advising guide to help students prepare for their intended bachelor's degree major. By following the course of study outlined in the appropriate Associate of Arts or Associate of Science pathway, students will have the necessary prerequisite courses to continue in their chosen disciplines. A pathway is not a major and will not be represented on the diploma.
Tier I Educational Leadership, M.Ed.
The Tier I Educational Leadership M.Ed. program is designed around a set of academic and site-based experiences that provide knowledge and skills for candidates seeking a stronger understanding of the dynamics of educational leadership. This self-select program leads to Tier I leadership certification in Georgia. This allows an individual to serve as an assistant principal or/in district-level leadership positions that do not supervise principals. The program design gives students a comprehensive understanding of beginning leadership concepts and activities. Students develop the dispositions required to lead school and district improvement efforts by focusing on linking theory, research and practice to positively affect student outcomes. Translation and Interpretation, Graduate Certificate
Translators and Interpreters convert information from one language into another language. Employment opportunities for translators and interpreters are projected to grow 20 percent by 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Translation program at Georgia State University provides professional training in written translation for students who wish to acquire proficiency in a specific language combination. Spanish, French and German translation options are offered. The Interpretation program at Georgia State provides professional training in both medical and legal interpretation (with a focus on the state court system) and is currently offered only in Spanish. Students must receive the translation certificate before going on to receiving the interpretation certificate.
Translational Biomedical Sciences, Ph.D.
The Translational Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. offers an innovative and interdisciplinary training experience designed to position graduates to contribute to the improvement of human health through various biomedical science related careers. Key areas of educational and research focus will be complemented by cross-training in business and entrepreneurship to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how to take discoveries from the "bench to the bedside." Urban Education Endorsement
Georgia State’s Urban Education Endorsement is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level to provide you with specialized preparation for teaching in urban settings regardless of where you are in your teaching career. You will develop a broad understanding of urban schools and communities, emphasizing the social, economic, political and historical factors that shape urban schooling. You’ll learn culturally responsive teaching strategies that intellectually, socially and emotionally empower students. Teachers pursuing this endorsement may be enrolled as non-degree students or in specific programs. This multidisciplinary online teaching endorsement is offered through the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, the Department of Middle and Secondary Education and the Department of Educational Policy Studies. You will learn to create connections between theory and practice, moving beyond stories of school failure to identify and cultivate educational assets within urban schools and communities to empower learners. The undergraduate-level endorsement can be added by undergraduates admitted to a teacher education program with a 2.5 undergraduate GPA and a pre-service teacher certificate. Urban Studies, M.I.S.
Join Georgia State's urban studies master’s program for a deep dive into these urban phenomena: inclusive development, transit, economic resilience or environmental sustainability. Offering an interdisciplinary perspective on urban studies, students follow a core trajectory of shared courses and have the freedom to specialize by individually selecting from a large offer of elective courses. Students work with a faculty advisor throughout their studies and have the opportunity to join the Urban Studies student association with like minded peers. The Urban Studies Institute’s PhD in Urban Studies prepares students for academic and research careers at the forefront of urban analysis.Our doctoral students work alongside top faculty in their fields and join future leaders passionate about solving urban community issues. The doctoral curriculum provides a rigorous grounding in urban theory and praxis and methodological training to analyze complex challenges emerging within urban environments and processes. Our program draws from the interdisciplinary expertise of core and affiliate faculty to enable students to build core analytical competencies and translational research skills needed to interpret, evaluate, and communicate across diverse urban domains. Students work with the support of faculty advisors to build a program of study tailored to their individual interests, objectives, and future goals. You can earn a B.A. and M.A. in Georgia State's Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies in as little as five years, saving time and tuition dollars compared to conventional programs. Students who earn M.A. degrees in WGSS may go on to pursue careers in social work, community organizing, education, counseling, public health, law, public policy, government administration, research, the non-profit sector, and the corporate world, or they may go on to pursue Ph.D.’s in various fields. This 4+1 program, also known as a dual degree program, allows qualified students to count up to 12 credit hours toward completion of both the undergraduate and graduate degrees (double credits). Georgia State University's curriculum in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) stands out for its emphasis on the intersections of gender and sexuality with race, nationalism, transnationalism, and social change. We have a strong emphasis on Black Feminist Thought, Queer theory and LGBTQ studies, and the theory and practice of activism. The study of women, gender and sexualities in their multiple racial and class dimensions and cultural contexts is a growing field of inquiry in many disciplines. More and more jobs are framed with an expectation of some background in feminist analysis. As an endeavor that is interdisciplinary and transnational, the Institute for Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies contributes to the education of its own graduate students and students in other departments, colleges and schools of Georgia State. This certificate program allows students to receive explicit acknowledgment of their work in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Some may simply want recognition of a strength reflected in their course of study. Others may wish to pursue employment for which a certificate is deemed an advantage.
