You can earn a B.A. and M.A. in Georgia State's Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies in as little as five years, saving time and tuition dollars compared to conventional programs. Students who earn M.A. degrees in WGSS may go on to pursue careers in social work, community organizing, education, counseling, public health, law, public policy, government administration, research, the non-profit sector, and the corporate world, or they may go on to pursue Ph.D.’s in various fields. This 4+1 program, also known as a dual degree program, allows qualified students to count up to 12 credit hours toward completion of both the undergraduate and graduate degrees (double credits). Georgia State University's curriculum in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) stands out for its emphasis on the intersections of gender and sexuality with race, nationalism, transnationalism, and social change. We have a strong emphasis on Black Feminist Thought, Queer theory and LGBTQ studies, and the theory and practice of activism. The study of women, gender and sexualities in their multiple racial and class dimensions and cultural contexts is a growing field of inquiry in many disciplines. More and more jobs are framed with an expectation of some background in feminist analysis. As an endeavor that is interdisciplinary and transnational, the Institute for Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies contributes to the education of its own graduate students and students in other departments, colleges and schools of Georgia State. This certificate program allows students to receive explicit acknowledgment of their work in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Some may simply want recognition of a strength reflected in their course of study. Others may wish to pursue employment for which a certificate is deemed an advantage.

The Georgia State University M.A. program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has three interrelated areas of concentration: Globalization Sexuality studies Social change Our curriculum stands out for its emphasis on the intersections of gender and sexuality with race, nationalisms, ethnicity and transnationalism. We have a strong emphasis on queer theory and LGBTQ studies and the theory and practice of activism. One distinction of our program is that students may complete one of three different kinds of theses: Research Thesis: an originally researched topic that contributes to a new area of gender and sexuality studies scholarship Creative Thesis: creative project in the arts, such as a play, an art exhibit or mixed-media work Action Research Thesis: an internship with a local social justice-oriented organization or other form of community and/or activist engagement
Workplace Intercultural Competence, Undergraduate Certificate
The Georgia State University Workplace Intercultural Competence certificate prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage diverse workplaces in various settings including business, construction, agriculture, education and healthcare. Students will acquire and hone the skills required to work in a diversity-rich setting and engage in intercultural communication, including working with second-language learners.
World Language Teacher Graduate Certificate
The Georgia State University online World Languages Teacher Graduate Certificate is essential to successful classroom teaching and student learning. Earning this online graduate certificate will not only improve your classroom practice but will also help you more effectively engage your students in learning activities that help your students develop proficiency in world languages. This online certificate is for individuals who hold a university undergraduate or graduate degree (with a GPA higher than 2.50) who are interested in being recommended for clear and renewable k-12 teaching certification by the Georgia Performance Standards Commission (GaPSC) to teach a world language (Spanish, French, German, Chinese or Korean). Students in the Department of World Languages and Cultures may apply nine credits from their program (FORL 6128 and electives FORL 8125 and FORL 8126), leaving only 9-12 more credits needed to be recommended for a renewable certificate. The curriculum integrates social justice and equity principles and is grounded in educational theory, research and best teaching practices. Students take specialized education and content courses throughout the program and gain practical experience in kindergarten through 12th grade. Faculty support teacher candidates in planning, instruction, assessment and reflection with colleagues, faculty and partner schools committed to excellence in education. This program also includes the option of pursuing a Dual Language Immersion endorsement online and on campus for individuals with an interest in teaching elementary school courses (typically math, science and social science) in the target language with additional coursework. For individuals seeking a master's degree with teaching certification, the 30-credit Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) in World Languages Education program, available online and on campus, allows program graduates to explore multidisciplinary teaching with the possibility of an endorsement (ESOL, DLI or Urban Education) or to deepen their mastery of the target language. The World Language Teacher Graduate Certificate is embedded in the 30-credit M.I.S. in World Languages Education. World Languages and Applied Intercultural Studies, M.A.
The M.A. in World Languages and Applied Intercultural Studies is designed to develop students’ career-readiness through an innovative curriculum that emphasizes world language skills, intercultural competency, and global awareness. The program leverages the unique international resources at Georgia State University as well as the cultural and historical ties of the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia. Graduates will be prepared to pursue careers in industry or as entrepreneurs, work for government agencies and non-governmental agencies (NGOs), work as activists, curators or community leaders, become interpreters or language instructors, or go on to doctoral-level education. The B.A. in World Languages and Cultures offers students a program of study that focuses on career readiness through an innovative curriculum and experiential learning opportunities. Our curriculum emphasizes intercultural competency that is required across all professions in the 21st century. With courses for developing world language proficiency, multicultural literacies, and college to career connection, the goal of the program is to cultivate the next generation of a workforce that can compete globally. Georgia State University's online Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) in World Languages Education is for multilingual students who are seeking a master’s degree with an initial teaching certification in a world/foreign language such as Chinese, French, German, Korean or Spanish (grades kindergarten through 12th grade). The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in World Languages Education leads to a teaching degree with a clear and renewable (T5) induction certificate in Georgia with a step advance on the pay scale above the (T4) certification only. The interdisciplinary nature of this program affords the opportunity to explore multidisciplinary teaching with the possibility to pursue an endorsement (ESOL, DLI, Urban Education) or to deepen your mastery of the target language and cultures. This program integrates principles of social justice and equity and is grounded in educational theory, research and best teaching practices. Throughout the program, students take specialized education and content courses and gain practical experience in kindergarten through 12th grade teaching. Faculty support teacher candidates in planning, instruction, assessment and reflection with colleagues, faculty and partner schools who are committed to excellence in education. The program offers an advanced professional studies track in French or Spanish. This track is designed for T4-certified educators in French or Spanish seeking a Master's degree and T5 certification in French or Spanish. The track will parallel the existing MIS World Languages Education program, but instead of the nine credits of fieldwork, you'll take six credits in professional studies coursework and one language/culture course. This program leads to a step advance on the pay scale (T5) above the initial (T4) certification only.
